The bear grunted, leapt forward as the crossbow bolt sank in to the fletching.
He sighted on the base of the neck as the bear turned toward him. Squeezing the second trigger sent his remaining bolt on it's way. The second bolt sank into the bear's chest right where he aimed. It bellowed, reared up on it's back legs. At the same time, he was already laying the crossbow aside.
Simultaneously, Thane put a bolt in the bear's side just back from the shoulder. He heard Thane swap weapons as the bear swung their way. Thane put his final bolt in the neck as the bear roared, reared up on it's hind legs. It dropped to all fours, nearly fell... Then... Recovered.
The shots couldn't have been better, any one of them should have stopped him, turned him at least...
"The tree, Thane, now." Tymiran had the scyta ready and stood his ground, dropping into a ready, crouch...
Winter Solstice is coming and Tymiran and Thane, his apprentice are headed to Byryharta for the celebration. Tymiran plans to introduce Thane to his family, hunt with his apprentice in the forests and on the tundra and enjoy a little rest and relaxation.
On the way into town he spots some very large bear tracks. Bears should be busy denning up for the winter not prowling around the outskirts of a small community. This bear has killed livestock and hunters have been hired to put a stop to it.
Then there's a hitch, when they go to the livery that Tymiran's adopted brother owns. Shevin is sore, so sore if someone touches him he flinches. Why? Already, things are not going smoothly.
The second hitch comes when Thane has a run in with one of the captains of the town guard. Tymiran finds out the reasons behind his brother's lie and he cannot stand aside. When the hunters are found dead, Tymiran takes it upon himself and his apprentice to hunt the bear down and finish it.

As usual the story is very well written and the characters are easy enough to understand but then there are those nasty BUTS. I keep hoping the stories will take us through an action pack adventure, because the author does a great job of writing that material but we keep getting the wrong kind of action (for this reader anyway).I know that in today’s society we are supposed to be more tolerant of alternate life styles but these fellows would have sex at an IRS audit.
Also I when it came to the title of the story I had to look twice to find the second bear but he was there I guess.
I know it seems like I am saying a lot of negative stuff about the book but it is still getting 4 stars from me because of how well the parts I am not too embarrassed to talk about are written. Also in case it means anything to folks who read this review I do plan to continue buying A.M. Helmuth’s future stories just for the adventures that are contained within.

Once more, Helmuth creates a world written in vivid detail that allows the reader to not only read the journey of Tymiran and Thane, but make them nearly feel as though they are there. This story on particular shows the side of Tymiran that's not quite known as he encounters an old friend and flame. As usual, Tiean can't keep himself out of trouble, but it's for the right reasons. A good read for any fan of the fantasy genre.
Bounty hunter Ty and his apprentice Thane are back in Two Bears, a kick-butt story filled with hunting, quarrels, misunderstandings, rape, murder, and A.M. Helmuth’s usual man-man romance. The older and experienced Ty and his young apprentice Thane are still in love and their relationship remains unthreatened throughout this story, though one of Ty’s family members questions the longevity of their relationship. Ty and Thane profess their love and their desire to remain lovers, but no antagonist ever threatens the mettle of their highly active and lust filled intimacy. Sure, Ty would whup anyone daring enough to come between him and Thane, but this reader is always wondering when someone will try to steal handsome Thane away. As it stands, the two men remain close and help a family member who has the misfortune of falling in love with the wrong person — a large, hairy bear of a man, rough and lacking compassion for his lover. Ty resolves that dilemma right before he and Ty set off to track down another bear — a real bear that is injured and on a killing spree. This drama increases here and the descriptions of the hunt are vivid and as real as I have ever read. And the conclusion was satisfying and left me eager to go on another hunt with Ty and Thane, which is why I give this one 5 stars. Over all, if you like hunting stories and "bromance" doesn’t bother you, Two Bears is a great read.
I love the continuing romance of the main characters, and that their heroics are well plotted. I love the contrast of the subtleness of the one "bear" versus the literalness of the bear killing livestock. A.M. Helmuth delivers on her promise for action, adventure, love, and lust all with great graphic descriptions and detailing. I would recommend this entire series to anyone with an open enough mind to not care about the man on man love.
